A major $17.5 million upgrade at Newington Reserve has officially opened, giving football clubs and local residents access to a modern sports and recreation facility designed to support year-round activity in Newington, Silverwater and surrounding communities.
The redevelopment has transformed the reserve into a comprehensive sporting destination featuring a state-of-the-art synthetic football field, a new sports pavilion, outdoor fitness equipment, barbecue facilities, upgraded parking and improved landscaping.
City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Martin Zaiter said the project reflected the community’s desire for better recreational infrastructure and stronger support for grassroots sport. He described the upgraded reserve as a new premier destination where local families can participate in sport and recreation for years to come.
The project was shaped in part through community consultation, with almost 70 per cent of respondents supporting the proposed upgrade. Residents highlighted the need for improved sporting facilities, additional recreational opportunities and a dedicated venue for local football clubs.
Outdoor fitness equipment was also strongly supported during the consultation, receiving backing from more than 63 per cent of respondents. Around 61 per cent supported the proposal to use synthetic turf at the reserve.
The new synthetic field has been designed to increase opportunities for training and competition regardless of weather conditions while also incorporating environmental considerations. Instead of conventional rubber infill, the surface uses an organic timber-based material, offering a more sustainable alternative.
The synthetic turf combines dual fibres with the wood-based infill to create a playing surface intended to provide a feel and response closer to natural grass, while still offering the traction required for sporting activities.
The redevelopment also includes an architecturally designed Newington Reserve Pavilion, featuring dedicated home and away change rooms with showers and toilets, public amenities and a kiosk overlooking the playing field.
NSW Minister for Sport Steve Kamper said the upgraded facility would give local players and clubs greater opportunities to train and compete throughout the year, while providing families with a convenient place to stay active and enjoy sport.
Football NSW CEO John Tsatsimas said the project demonstrated the value of cooperation between local government, government agencies and sporting organisations. He noted that continued investment in facilities would be important as football participation grows across NSW.
Funding for the redevelopment was provided by the City of Parramatta and the NSW Government’s Office of Sport, with Football NSW contributing $20,000 towards the project.
With its upgraded playing surface, new amenities and additional recreation facilities, Newington Reserve is now positioned as a significant community sporting hub, offering local footballers and families more opportunities to play, train, exercise and connect close to home.
