NSW motorists who forget to renew their vehicle registration will soon receive SMS reminders as part of a new initiative by the Minns Labor Government aimed at reducing accidental fines and improving road safety across the state. The new system is designed to help drivers avoid unknowingly operating unregistered and uninsured vehicles on NSW roads.

The government says more than 50,000 motorists were fined last year for driving vehicles that were either unregistered or uninsured. In response, a new campaign has been launched encouraging drivers to sign up for digital registration reminders through Service NSW to help them stay on top of renewal dates.
Currently, almost one million people already use digital reminders through their MyServiceNSW account, email notifications and the Service NSW app. These reminders are typically sent six weeks before registration expiry, again two weeks before expiry and once more the day after the registration expires.
Under the updated system, motorists who opt into digital notifications will now also receive an SMS reminder the day after their vehicle registration expires. The government says the additional text message provides a faster and more direct reminder in case drivers miss email notifications or forget their renewal deadline.
Drivers who do not register for digital reminders will continue receiving traditional paper renewal notices by mail around six weeks before their registration is due. However, the government hopes the convenience of SMS alerts will encourage millions more motorists to switch to digital notifications over the coming months.
Messages promoting the new reminder system are expected to be sent to up to 4.5 million vehicle owners throughout May and June. Officials say the goal is to reduce the number of people accidentally driving unregistered vehicles while also helping motorists avoid costly penalties and insurance complications.
NSW Minister for Customer Service and Digital Government Jihad Dib said many people lead busy lives and often miss registration deadlines because paperwork is forgotten or misplaced. He said the new SMS reminder could save drivers hundreds of dollars in fines while also improving safety on the roads.
NSW Roads Minister Jenny Aitchison said driving an unregistered vehicle not only carries financial penalties but also leaves motorists without compulsory third-party insurance in the event of an accident. She encouraged drivers to sign up through the Service NSW app, describing the system as a quick and practical way to avoid mistakes and stay protected.
Vehicle owners are reminded that cars must not be driven once registration expires until the renewal process has been completed. Registration also ensures vehicles meet road safety standards and maintain compulsory third-party insurance coverage required under NSW law.
