A major redevelopment vision is taking shape in southern Parramatta, with plans for a new Chinatown precinct, civic square and upgraded streets and laneways aimed at turning an underused section of the CBD into a destination for culture, dining, entertainment and community activity.
The CBD South Parramatta Master Plan sets out a long-term strategy for renewing the area south of the railway line. The first stage proposes a dedicated Chinatown precinct alongside a new civic gathering space known as Woodhouse Square, creating additional reasons for residents and visitors to spend time in the southern CBD.
The proposed Chinatown would provide a platform for celebrating Chinese Australian culture through food, cultural events and public art. Council says the precinct is intended to support local businesses while creating a stronger cultural identity for an area that has significant potential for further activity and investment.
City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Martin Zaiter said the project could play an important role in strengthening the city’s position as a major cultural destination in Western Sydney. He said the master plan would help transform the southern CBD into a more active and attractive area for both the local community and visitors.
According to Council, Woodhouse Square would become a new civic space designed to encourage people to gather and spend time in the precinct. The combination of public space, dining, cultural experiences and entertainment is intended to contribute to a stronger evening economy while giving local businesses greater opportunities to attract customers.
The proposal also places significant emphasis on improving how people move through the area. Planned changes include upgraded streetscapes, broader footpaths, more active laneways and better pedestrian links connecting the southern CBD with Parramatta Station and the wider city centre.
Council says community response to the proposed transformation has been encouraging, with residents expressing support for a more connected and vibrant southern CBD. The project is also being positioned as a way to recognise the contribution of the Chinese Australian community while creating a precinct capable of attracting people throughout the day and into the evening.
The first stage forms part of a larger strategy for the CBD South Parramatta area. Rather than focusing solely on individual developments, the master plan takes a broader approach covering public spaces, streets, pedestrian connections, cultural identity and economic activity.
With Phase 1 establishing the proposed Chinatown precinct and Woodhouse Square, attention will now move towards the next stage of planning. Council is preparing to commence Phase 2 of the CBD South Parramatta Precinct Master Plan, with additional planning work and community consultation expected as the broader vision develops.
The proposed transformation could give southern Parramatta a stronger identity within the city’s rapidly evolving CBD. If progressed, the combination of cultural attractions, public spaces, hospitality, improved pedestrian links and evening activity would create a new destination while supporting Council’s wider ambition for Parramatta to remain a major cultural and economic centre of Western Sydney.
